As you all know, we are going through one of the coldest spells for 29 years and it has had a significant impact upon our working lives. So much so, on the 5th January, the management contacted us to say that a Major Incident had been declared across NWAS due to the fact that there could be no guarantee that our ambulances would be able to get to all 999 calls.
UNISON and the management have been keeping in regular contact to ensure that the effect of the Major Incident declaration on our members is minimised. We are pleased with the approach that the management have taken, especially over the last couple of weeks where it has been agreed for the provision of meals to be made available to staff at hospital canteens. This in itself has not been easy to achieve as it required the agreement of all of the Hospital Trusts.
As you all know, our Meal Management Policy allows for the suspension of the policy while on a Major Incident and the same provisions at hospitals have also been made available again to our staff. Lunch packs have also been provided to staff where facilities are not available or during out of hours.
Both the management and UNISON will continue to review the situation on a regular basis with a view to returning things to normal as soon as possible. On the whole, the feedback from our members has been extremely positive and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience and understanding while we are going through this difficult patch.
